SmarTeam SQL multi-site

Just a quick word on a bit of recent SmarTeam success…

We have a customer that is now running 3 SQL SmarTeam sites.  (Inflow now has many other Oracle multi-site SmarTeam customers)

This is the SQL server with replicated Vault files only   (DB is not replicated)

The quick performance scoop is:

–       An assembly that takes about 2 minutes @ Site1 to Open

–       Was about 24 minutes @ Site2 and is now under 2.5 minutes

–       At Site3, it simply failed before and is now about 3 minutes or less (Slower line for the DB info)

–       Login times and general object searching also decreased significantly since we now have a configuration server at each site

  1. Hi Scott,
Good timing w/your post. We are reviewing a project to expand SmarTeam to a remote plant.
Is this type of MUS configuration sanctioned by SmarTeam?
Are all three sites using a single instance of the SQL Db (primary site)?
Why don’t you/this company use SQL replication? I have heard SmarTeam was considering the development of MUS based on SQL.

  4. Hi Ed,
Glad this helped! Sometimes you wonder if it is worth our time to do this, but at least your reading it and found it helpful!
Yes, this is now something on SmarTeam’s price list and 100% supported.
Yes, 1 SQL server in the main site and all the rest still connect to it.
Advantages are that the whole vault and vault replication stuff is built in along with the local server for the config and session services.
SQL DB replication still is not supported and won’t work with the std SmarTeam Multi-site tools. There are all sorts of extra SmarTeam functions to manage ownerships and the multiple vaults. The SmarTeam tools replicate the DB structure changes and create the instances of the DB. Since SQL does all this different, they have to rework those tools. I can not say it can’t be partially done manually using the SQL specific tools, but since it is not supported we have not even tried since it is not practical to deploy in a customer environment.
SmarTeam says that are working on this, but will still not commit to a solid time frame.
