SOLIDWORKS: Administrative Image Installation Troubleshooting

Utilizing administrative image installation for a system administrator can allow you to customize multiple installations and deploy the installation to all clients with one command, which allows all users to have the same install and setup. This can make the admin install process significantly easier and provide uniformity throughout the company. However, as you can imagine, there are several steps that need to be perfected for this process to work and to be deployed to all users. In the unlikely event that you encounter a snag while doing your own administrative image installation, here are a few recommended decisions to help get you and your team back up and running quicker. SOLIDWORKS 2017 What’s New – PDM Task Enhancements: Generate MBD 3D PDFs, DXF to PDF & MS Office to PDF Conversions – #SW2017

SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional 2017 introduces a number of new enhancements in the tasks for converting various file types. The first being a new output format for SOLIDWORKS files. For SOLIDWORKS MBD users, the Convert task in PDM Professional can be set up to automatically generate SOLIDWORKS MBD 3D PDFs. To set this up, in the properties of the Convert task select the ‘Conversion Settings.’ Then set the Output file format to ‘3D PDF – MBD.’ Once set, you can then select the themes to use for Parts and Assemblies (if the theme is in your PDM Professional vault, it must be cached before task execution) and which views to publish. SOLIDWORKS PDM 2017 What’s New – Latest Version Overwrite – #SW2017

In PDM 2017 there is a new feature that is as powerful and potentially risky as the “Rollback” function. “Latest Version Overwrite” gives a user the ability to overwrite the latest version of the file with the most current version of a file. If data storage is a worry for your company, “Latest Version Overwrite” may be the simple solution it needs. File cleanup can be automated through workflows or allowed per user’s discretion. In normal PDM function, a new version of a file is created EVERY time a file or its corresponding metadata is altered and checked back in. In the archive server each version is a separate file […]

Solidworks Enterprise PDM Permissions, Revisited.

In Enterprise PDM 2015, additional permissions were made available.  Settings Permissions tends to be one of the more confusing tasks for a PDM Administrator due to the different types of permissions that can overlap and intersect with each other.  The new permissions are: Move Folder Delete Folder Add or Rename folder Move File In Prior versions it was required to have both the ability to Add a Folder or File to the Destination and Delete it from the source to perform a move. In order to perform one of these operations on a file or folder, the user will need a combination of both folder and state permissions in both source and […]

A 1938 BUGATTI – THAT FLIES!

Last fall CATI / InFlow Technology had its annual Design Innovation Summit. We kicked off the start of the tour at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. A nice aside to the Design Innovation Summit was the opportunity to walk through the EAA Museum and see some unique and rare aircraft. One aircraft in particular was the 1938 Bugatti Model 100P. It was a one of a kind, designed to race, but never flown. Just prior to our Summit some enthusiasts came in to review and measure the Bugatti Model 100P in an attempt to recreate it and test fly it. Well, yesterday was the day! The plane design from over 75 years ago […]

How To Use Copy Tree 2015: The Basics

EPDM 2015 has given copy tree some more power than previous versions as well as fixes a few bugs that were there previously. For those of you have not used this before, the copy tree function is EPDM's take on SolidWorks Pack n' Go feature. With this tool, you will be able to move files around and outside of the vault while keeping their reference to each other. Many designers prefer creating new parts and assemblies from geometry that exists. Most will use a save as function in SolidWorks, but will then have to spend time finding the references for that new part. Using the copy tree allows a user […]

How to Manually Delete File Vault Views and Why You Would Need to.

Disclaimer: I'd like to first mention that this blog article and solution should only be attempted by EPDM admin and IT. As it does require admin rights on the local machine to edit registry keys, without proper knowledge of the registry key it is very easy to compromise your machine. Also, this blog is intended for use in situations where the vault is already corrupt or not working properly. For people just wanting to replace their view, use the standard procedure for adding and removing the file vault view. Please be sure to always check in all files into vault if possible or at least have copies saved in another […]
