SOLIDWORKS World 2018 Recap: The Future of PLM and Beyond

At SOLIDWORKS World 2012 in San Diego, California, Vice Chairman and CEO of Dassault Systems, Bernard Charles, introduced the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to the SOLIDWORKS community. Bernard explained the concept as “beyond PLM” connecting companies, users, and processes. The idea was introduced as a simple compass that represented the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Over the next 6 years, the SOLIDWORKS community has been slowly introduced to details about the platform, further explaining the vision of the 3DEXPERIENCE. This year at SOLIDOWKRS World 2018 was no exception. The introduction of SOLIDWORKS 3DEXPERIENCE PLM Services on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform was unveiled by Milos Zupanski, Director or Product Portfolio Management, in one if the keynote presentations […]

SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional Productivity Pack – PDM Folder Permission Manager Review

Last year the InFlow team announced the development of the PDM Productivity Pack. This set of tools has been developed to enhance the capabilities of PDM Professional administrators, in any organization. The PDM Productivity Pack contains a set of utilities that have been developed by our team of PDM experts. The PDM Productivity Pack includes the following utilities; Advanced Notification, File Move Tool, BOM Export, Set Revision Add-in, Property Updater, and Folder Permission Manager. In this post, we will take a quick look at the powerful “Folder Permission Manager”. Have you ever tried setting folder permissions on a large set of PDM folders? Or my favorite; setting up an entire […]

Using columns with a search card in Solidworks PDM Pro and Standard

Using columns with a search card in Solidworks PDM Pro and Standard So you’ve searched for something in the vault, but the results might not have all the information you’re looking for. Can something be done to the search results so that more information is displayed when a search is run? Can these results be unique depending on which search card you use? Well, you’re in luck, in both cases it can. So how would one go about changing the different results? This is modified in the PDM Administration Tool (Start > Administration or Tools > Administration (see image 1)). If your logged-in user has

ENOVIA Search Card – What is it and how to

What is the ENOVIA Search Card? The ENOVIA Search Card is a tool contained within the SOLIDWORKS and WINDOWS Integration of ENOVIA. It is used to search SOLIDWORKS parts, assemblies and drawings inside the vault from within the integration itself. Out of the box, it is important to note that the integration only handles SOLIDWORKS file types, therefore the Search Card will be limited to only show those results. The Search Card can be found inside of your Windows Explorer once the user has clicked the 3DEXPERIENCE icon and logged in. When the user first logs into the system and before the user selects anything, the card should be the […]

That Was Easy: Using Buttons on a Data Card

That Was Easy: Using Buttons on a Data Card Have you ever wished that you could just have an “easy button” for something? Well, using SOLIDWORKS PDM Data Card controls, you can create your own! The Button control allows you to place a button on a data card that can be configured to launch a web page, open a file, browse to a location, or even run a custom add-in. Here are a couple of examples of how you can use buttons to make tasks just a bit easier. Launch a Web Page: Using a button to launch a web page is the easiest option to configure. To start, select […]

Automatic PDM Standard SQL Backups

It has been over a year since the release of SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard. Nearly everyone agrees PDM Standard is a huge step forward from Workgroup -though we did become a bit spoiled because making backups in Workgroup is much more straight forward than PDM Standard backups. It frightens me how many locations I visit where PDM is not properly being backed up. Most people seem to do a pretty good job ensuring their files are being backed up (any good file backup tool will do the trick), but many completely forget there is also a database component to PDM as well. PDM Standard’s database runs on SQL Express. The problem […]

Solidworks PDM Local View Basics and Troubleshooting

There are some Unique aspects to Solidworks PDM in respect to other common software applications.  One of those unique aspects is the “Local View”.  This is written especially for those of you that are either new users of Solidworks PDM or responsible for installations or administration. What Is a Solidworks PDM Local View? Your Solidworks PDM Local View is an application mechanic that is rather unique compared to most applications. After the Solidworks PDM application is installed there is an additional utility called a “view setup” that must be run for the user to access files in a vault. Since vaults are singularly controlled entities, each vault will require its […]

SOLIDWORKS PDM 101: Setting Document Revisions

In a previous article, we discussed the inner workings of PDM versions. In a nutshell, versions are the way PDM tracks the changes to individual files. Every time we make an official change to a file, a new version is created and added to the file’s history. The good news is that the system handles versions for us automatically. If you want to know more about versions and how they work, check out our last PDM 101 here. People often ask if file versions and file revisions are the same thing. In some other systems, the term is interchangeable. That means whenever a change is completed by the user the […]

SOLIDWORKS: PDM Products Simplified

Occasionally, I will talk with a customer that is new to Solidworks Products or has been newly or temporarily assigned in an administration or project role for the company’s vault. This information is for you folks… you know who you are . 🙂 The SOLIDWORKS PDM products can be a bit confusing to short timers. The names are similar and there is not an easy way through normal communication to differentiate or identify what product you use. First, Solidworks PDM products are client server multi-user applications that helps companies control, share and make document management more efficient and effective. All Solidworks PDM Products have a vault with secure user based access […]

SOLIDWORKS: Help!!! I Have Cyclic PDM References

I have seen, on more than one occasion, an assembly that has multiple cyclic references in an assembly. Now, I totally understand that when you’re under a deadline, it may save time initially to just copy a part to use for another assembly as opposed to searching your vault, especially if you have a large data set that can take a considerable amount of time, also assuming the description is incorrect, etc. However, as previously noted, while you may be saving time initially, the implications to having duplicate parts can be astronomic, several versions down the road, especially if the assembly is to be used in multiple other upper level […]
