SOLIDWORKS 2019 What’s New – Conditional Notifications in PDM Workflows (PDM Professional Only) – #SW2019

New functionality in SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional 2019 is the introduction of Conditional Notifications in Workflows. Prior to the 2019 release of SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional, notifications would be sent to users (or groups of users) during a transition between states. While the you could make the recipients of the notification dynamic (selectable by the user performing the transition), there was not a way to define when to not send the notification at all. With 2019, in the Workflow editor, you can create a new type of notification called a Conditional Notification. Conditional Notifications work, like you may have guessed like Transition Conditions. The difference being that while Transitions Conditions are used […]

SOLIDWORKS PDM Vault Maintenance: How to split your archive onto multiple discs

Is your Vault Server (known as the Archive Server) nearly out of space? PDM has functionality to help you make space temporarily until the situation can be rectified or simply choose to span files across multiple drives. **WARNING** Due NOT relocate Files while users are in the vault. Doing so could risk file or data corruption. Preparation Ensure User activity is stopped. Logins may be blocked from the admin tool and License usage may be checked from the Licensing section of the admin tool for Solidworks PDM 2015 and up. If possible, having users check in files is always a good precaution. Backup Solidworks PDM Recovery Files in the event […]

Automatic Part Numbering – SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional

In this post, we are going to look at automatic part numbering in SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional. The setup takes a few minutes, but the benefits are long-lasting. For this setup, we will be creating a sequential serial number to drive our SolidWorks components (1XXXXX), a numbering system to auto number SOLIDWORKS assemblies (6XXXXX), and a list of numbers for tooling creation (T-XXXX using a pre-defined list). In this example, our engineers will utilize the numbering for SOLIDWORKS parts and assemblies. However, the tooling numbers will be setup primarily for a tooling designer. Let’s go through the setup. (IMPORTANT: ALWAYS TEST CHANGES TO FEATURES IN A TEST ENVIRONMENT BEFORE ENABLING IN […]

Managing SOLIDWORKS toolbox files in PDM

When it comes to managing SOLIDWORKS toolbox files in PDM there are 2 aspects to consider. Should I use SOLIDWORKS PDM to manage my toolbox files? How do I set up SOLIDWORKS PDM to manage my toolbox files? Let’s start with the first question. Some of the reasons you would want to manage your toolbox files in PDM: The need for all SOLIDWORKS users to access the same toolbox data instead of each user having their own, separate, toolbox. Capturing additional metadata, such as custom part numbers or manufacturer information. The need to limit who can modify toolbox information, as well as record who made changes. Performance improvement over accessing […]

GET VERSION DIALOG VS GET LATEST VERSION DIALOG IN SOLIDWORKS PDM

Those of you who use SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional or Standard with the ability to get previous versions are likely already aware that there is functionality which allows you to get specific versions of files that you are interested in. This is available from a few different places within PDM, but most commonly accessed from the Actions menu within Windows Explorer. Under this menu there are two options. One is “Get Latest Version” and the other is “Get Version” which allows you to pick a specific version of the file you want to see. What you may not know is that the resulting reference file dialog box defaults to different options […]

PDM Branch/Merge

First, what is the new 2018 PDM Pro Branch/Merge? Say you have a spreadsheet file that you want to experiment with. You may make a copy of that file, make your changes. Then later if you want these changes “permanent” you save the new file on top of the original. It’s easy if you have a single file, but with an entire assembly with many files, branch/merge helps you keep track and automate the procedure. Even at first glance, the PDM Branch/Merge function looks great. It is a fast way to do what-if scenarios. If you attended one of our What’s New in 2018 rollouts, you saw a nice example […]

Rollback in SOLIDWORKS PDM 2017: What You Need to Know

SOLIDWORKS PDM 2017 introduced some new functionality to the rollback feature, allowing users to rollback their files with references. Before 2017, Rollback was a very simple feature, where users could take a single file and roll it back to a previous version while permanently deleting the versions after it. The process could only destroy the data associated with a single file and the wizard for completing it was simple as a result: If a file was rolled back unintentionally or too far, the effected file could be recovered from a proper backup (if one was taken since the files last changes), or the changes to that one file could be […]
