PDM Branch/Merge

First, what is the new 2018 PDM Pro Branch/Merge? Say you have a spreadsheet file that you want to experiment with. You may make a copy of that file, make your changes. Then later if you want these changes “permanent” you save the new file on top of the original. It’s easy if you have a single file, but with an entire assembly with many files, branch/merge helps you keep track and automate the procedure. Even at first glance, the PDM Branch/Merge function looks great. It is a fast way to do what-if scenarios. If you attended one of our What’s New in 2018 rollouts, you saw a nice example […]

Rollback in SOLIDWORKS PDM 2017: What You Need to Know

SOLIDWORKS PDM 2017 introduced some new functionality to the rollback feature, allowing users to rollback their files with references. Before 2017, Rollback was a very simple feature, where users could take a single file and roll it back to a previous version while permanently deleting the versions after it. The process could only destroy the data associated with a single file and the wizard for completing it was simple as a result: If a file was rolled back unintentionally or too far, the effected file could be recovered from a proper backup (if one was taken since the files last changes), or the changes to that one file could be […]

Folder Permission Assignment – SOLIDWORKS PDM 2018 What’s New

Folder Permission Assignment – #SW2018 SOLIDWORKS PDM 2018 has enhanced the assignment options for explicit folder permissions. In the past, you were only allowed to select a single folder at a time to assign permissions. Now in 2018 you can select multiple folders at a time via Shift+Click, Ctrl+Click Select, or Left-drag window. The Folder Permissions area will then display one of three statuses for the permissions checkbox. All Selected Folders Some of the selected folders None of the selected folders This will speed up the process of setting explicit folder permissions and lower the risk of errors or discrepancies between folders. I hope this part of the What’s New […]

Help my PDM preview won’t orbit or zoom, what’s the deal!

Often during an upgrade from previous version to newer version of PDM you will be able to upgrade to the most recent corresponding version of eDrawings. The role that eDrawings plays in the operation of PDM has several features and benefit, but for this scenario it allows you visualize your models from within the PDM explorer preview tab, to view features and geometry on the fly without the need to open a part every time. However sometimes during the process of upgrading to a newer version of PDM, the newer version of eDrawings that is associated will not get registered to allow the functionality. So, the following is how […]

What are the special options available for Solid works licensing? Pun intended…

During the occasionally instance here at Inflow we get asked what the “edit” button allows you to do in the Solidworks Network License manager. If you were to click on this button from the Solidworks Network license manager you would be able to control various licenses settings for each user or group who uses the Solidworks software, which can allow greater functionality and decreased time. As noted earlier there are several option available to you that will allow you to have increased functionality and access to your users if you the option file setting. First and foremost, when setting up the option file it is critical to save the notepad […]

SOLIDWORKS: Filtering Configurations with Enovia 2016X

SOLIDWORKS configurations play a huge role in the way that many companies use the software. When it some to configurations, some companies will choose to use each configuration as a separate part number, while others choose to use the “one file, one part” methodology. No matter which method is in use in you company, you are most likely using configurations in some way, shape, or form. Even users that don’t consider configs as separate parts will most likely use them for simplified representation, alternate position, or one of the other thousands of uses. If your still telling yourself that you don’t use configurations at all, go ahead and create a sheet metal […]

Decoding PLM – What’s a “data driven architecture”?

Don’t be scared off by the title of this post, it sounds complicated but it really isn’t that bad. Let me explain using movie rentals as an example. We used to roam the video store to find one we wanted to watch and hope it wasn’t checked out already. In the really old days, we had to “be kind and rewind” before racing back to the video store 5 minutes before they closed to return the movie the day it was due back to avoid penalty and those shaming looks from the clerk. Today we stream movies directly from their source and have eliminated the need for getting the physical […]

SOLIDWORKS PDM – Wildcards in Search Cards and How to Tame Them

The search cards in PDM allow you to refine your search using a number of parameters: file name, description, file owner, workflow state, and so on.  But, what if you don’t know exactly what words you’re searching for?  Enter wildcards. Wildcards are nothing new in searching, but this article will help explain how they are used in PDM. Typing in a single word will act with “implied” wildcards – one at the beginning of the word and one at the end.  Thus, searching my vault for “pin” yields many results, mostly with “pin” somewhere in the middle of the word.     What may be unexpected is that, when a standard […]

Solidworks PDM Permissions Revisited

In Enterprise PDM 2015, additional permissions were made available.  Settings Permissions tends to be one of the more confusing tasks for a PDM Administrator due to the different types of permissions that can overlap and intersect with each other.  The new permissions are: Move Folder Delete Folder Add or Rename folder Move File In Prior versions it was required to have both the ability to Add a Folder or File to the Destination and Delete it from the source to perform a move. In order to perform one of these operations on a file or folder, the user will need a combination of both folder and state permissions in both source and […]

2016 PDM Pro – Installing Web 2

For 2016, Web 2 is now included in the installer along with SolidWorks. For many this is a blessing as Web 2 has always been a separate installation. Many will attempt to install Web 2 with PDM Pro 2016, but be wary. The intention of this blog post today is not on how to install the Web 2 client onto a server (refer to SolidWorks PDM Web Server Guide), but rather to warn you before Installation. Something that many do not know or have not noticed, is that there are prerequisites for the Web 2 installation. It means, ironically, that admin needs to get a hold of the installation guide […]
