SOLIDWORKS: PDM 101 – File Types and Duplicate File Control

An often overlooked area of SOLIDWORKS PDM is the File Type options found in the admin tool. These options allow you to control how duplicate files are handled in your vault. You can disallow all duplicates or only include certain file types. There are a couple other settings, but those are only required if you use items or if your drawing previews need troubleshooting. The main reason for opening file types is to configure duplicate file rules. Before we dive into what you can do with files types, let’s talk about what is under the File Types node. The list that you see in the image below will be different […]

SOLIDWORKS EPDM Preview Tab Performance

If you've ever browsed into an EPDM folder you've likely seen the Preview Tab, just left of the Data Card tab. It's helpful to be able to Preview/See the content of the files BEFORE you open them! In this article we'll talk about the options for the Preview Tab that either make it MORE FUNCTIONAL, greater PERFORMANCE or how you can have it BOTH WAYS when previewing SOLIDWORKS Files.   First, we see an example EPDM Vault View showing the Data Card Tab when a file is selected:     Next, we see the contents of the Preview Tab set for PERFORMANCE: This picture shows the Preview Pane set for PERFORMANCE […]

SolidWorks Enterprise PDM 2015 – New Icons

In the 2015 release of SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM, SOLIDWORKS has made several nice additions.  One, seemingly minor new feature, will really help users.  The addition of the "explorer cache status icons" will help users keep track of the status of the files in their local cache. Here is why the icons are important… Let's say an engineer works on a drawing and checks in version 1.  After that another user checks out the file, modifies the file, and checks in version 2.  Engineer 1 still has version 1 of the drawing in his/her local cache.  Engineers with the power to see history would need to check the "cache status" of the file […]

ePDM Tips and Tricks: Update References Tool

One of the benefits of EPDM is that it takes over responsibility for managing file references. Once you have files in EPDM and linked, you will not have to worry about the references again. If you bring files into EPDM with broken references, you need to use the Update References Tool. User Interface The Update Reference Tool is a handy tool for cleaning up broken references on files as you bring them into EPDM. Before we get into the nuts and bolts of how we can use this tool, a word of warning: If you check in a file with broken references, those files will be removed from the reference tree. So, if you want to […]

ePDM Tips and Tricks: Copy Tree

Why start from scratch when you can easily and quickly create products that are the same but different using an enterprise PDM tool called Copy Tree. Copy Tree allows users to duplicate a group of files that are identical to the parent project. That is the "same as" part, but what about the "different"?Within the tool, users can select what files to copy versus reference, rename files, relocate files, and even compress the project to a zip file.  On the surface, duplicating a project sounds easy. Just copy paste, right? Those of you who have tried know what a mess it can create. Copy tree handles all the incoming and outgoing […]

The Best Practices for Enterprise PDM Convert Task

1) It is recommended to use dedicated task hosts with a minimum of RAM 3 GB for x32 OS (RAM 4 GB and more for x64 OS) and be able to open the drawings and files that are converted. Task host must have Solidworks installed and EPDM client and vault view(s) installed. 2) Enterprise PDM must be started with a continuous login on the task host. 3) Using a dedicated task host that meet the suggested requirements can help minimize resource overextensions which may result in failed tasks. 4) Running tasks requires at least one Solidworks license and one EPDM license. Solidworks license enabling tasks are: SolidWorks Premium, Office and […]
