SOLIDWORKS: PDM 101 – File Types and Duplicate File Control

An often overlooked area of SOLIDWORKS PDM is the File Type options found in the admin tool. These options allow you to control how duplicate files are handled in your vault. You can disallow all duplicates or only include certain file types. There are a couple other settings, but those are only required if you use items or if your drawing previews need troubleshooting. The main reason for opening file types is to configure duplicate file rules. Before we dive into what you can do with files types, let’s talk about what is under the File Types node. The list that you see in the image below will be different […]

Self Upgrading SOLIDWORKS PDM

If you choose to self upgrade your SOLIDWORKS PDM Products there are a few things that are commonly missed and some fundamentals that should be considered for healthy system and minimal downtime.  Also don’t forget to check the SOLIDWORKS PDM System Requirements! 1) SOLIDWORKS PDM Products are highly configurable to suite many types of business and company practices. This can make upgrading SOLIDWORKS PDM to a new version of software less than intuitive. 2) Each Version can introduce new challenges or practices. Make sure your Installation guide and reference material is up to date. The Whats New guide for PDM Standard and PDM Pro can help you understand new features or developments […]

Solidworks Enterprise PDM Permissions, Revisited.

In Enterprise PDM 2015, additional permissions were made available.  Settings Permissions tends to be one of the more confusing tasks for a PDM Administrator due to the different types of permissions that can overlap and intersect with each other.  The new permissions are: Move Folder Delete Folder Add or Rename folder Move File In Prior versions it was required to have both the ability to Add a Folder or File to the Destination and Delete it from the source to perform a move. In order to perform one of these operations on a file or folder, the user will need a combination of both folder and state permissions in both source and […]

A 1938 BUGATTI – THAT FLIES!

Last fall CATI / InFlow Technology had its annual Design Innovation Summit. We kicked off the start of the tour at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. A nice aside to the Design Innovation Summit was the opportunity to walk through the EAA Museum and see some unique and rare aircraft. One aircraft in particular was the 1938 Bugatti Model 100P. It was a one of a kind, designed to race, but never flown. Just prior to our Summit some enthusiasts came in to review and measure the Bugatti Model 100P in an attempt to recreate it and test fly it. Well, yesterday was the day! The plane design from over 75 years ago […]

SolidWorks Enterprise PDM 2015 – New Icons

In the 2015 release of SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM, SOLIDWORKS has made several nice additions.  One, seemingly minor new feature, will really help users.  The addition of the "explorer cache status icons" will help users keep track of the status of the files in their local cache. Here is why the icons are important… Let's say an engineer works on a drawing and checks in version 1.  After that another user checks out the file, modifies the file, and checks in version 2.  Engineer 1 still has version 1 of the drawing in his/her local cache.  Engineers with the power to see history would need to check the "cache status" of the file […]

WHAT’S NEW SOLIDWORKS ENTERPRISE PDM 2014

A summary of the exciting new features! • Automated Cache Management : New options for managing user and group caches are available. Clear the cache on logout and refresh on login (Get Latest Version on folder contents) provide often requested functionality. • Consolidated Delayed in State Notifications:  Files set to notify when “delayed in state” for a specified period of time are now consolidated into a single summary notification. Previously each file had a notification email which could be overwhelming in heavy traffic environments. • Dynamic Notification Recipients Filter:  When specifying dynamic notification recipients now, a filter field to eliminate long scrolling sessions for large user bases is provided. • […]
